This week is a look back at a fun job I had shooting for the Fire Service College. The FSC is the organisation responsible for training all firemen in the UK and they have a very cool training site that looks like a ghostly abandoned wasteland. Especially on a foggy day like the day we were scheduled to shoot.
However, it wasn’t the site they wanted to focus on for the job but a new mobile training unit which is basically a portable inferno that can be safely brought & placed almost anywhere.
As you can imagine, because they were asking us to go inside a big box that was on fire, we had quiet a few health and safety briefings to get through. My favourite moment of which was when we were told that they’d know it was time to pull us further back because they would hear a special alarm which sounds a lot like us shouting “Ow!” repeatedly.
At the end of the day we were all sweating and tired but I had a chance to make a few portraits of the brave men & women who were training to put their fears on hold and lives on the line for others.
It was a pleasure and an honour. What a fun day.
